Project Description

Electrify America chooses Efacec to charge electric vehicles in USA

Efacec has been selected by Electrify America as one of the key charging equipment suppliers that will share the delivery of more than 2,000 new ultra-fast electric vehicle charging systems across more than 484 sites in the USA. In the 1st phase of the project, Efacec will provide Electrify America more than 300 charging systems. This project will implement the first-ever certified cooled-cable 350kW DC Fast Charger that will provide charging speeds of up 20 miles a minute, which is seven times faster than today’s 50kW DC chargers.

“Efacec will help us deliver charging technology that is ultra-fast, convenient and reliable for today’s electric vehicles and for the larger batteries coming to market in the very near future,” said Cliff Fietzek, director of technology at Electrify America.

Pioneer in the area of electric mobility and a world leader in the production of fast and ultra-fast chargers for electric vehicles, Efacec strengthens its position in the global market by being chosen to participate in one of the most important initiatives worldwide in the area of EV charging solutions.

For João Paulo Pinto, Efacec’s Executive Board Member, “the reason why Efacec is among the exclusive group of brands chosen to carry out this ambitious project, is the same why Efacec is present in the world’s biggest and most demanding electric mobility markets – technological innovation, delivery capacity and commitment”.

All aspects of the charging system, from technology to design, are made by Efacec, including the operational management in the USA, which will be provided by Efacec USA, Inc. Pedro Silva, Director of Efacec Electric Mobilty adds that “our large expertise in the technology associated to this product and a multi-year investment in R&D, made it possible to conquer the confidence of Electrify America”.

The chargers have been custom-designed for Electrify America and have several advanced features including liquid-cooled cables. This is the first time that liquid cooled CCS1 charging cables have received certification. The cooling is a key factor in enabling higher-amperage charging without a significant increase in the cable thickness. Featuring a much smaller cable cross section than the traditional high-powered cable option, the cooled cables are thin, flexible, lightweight and easy to handle.

World leader in the production of fast and ultra-fast chargers for electric vehicle, Efacec inaugurated in early February its new facilities dedicated to electric mobility, located in Maia, near to Oporto. This new plant, which incorporates the best practices from the technology and engineering domains, has been designed looking for a large-scale production of fast charging devices and will play a strategic role to supply Electrify America with the new state-of-art EV ultra-fast chargers.

Electrify America will begin the installation of the ultra-fast charging systems starting this spring with the goal of all stations being operational or in construction in 17 metropolitan areas and on highways in 39 states by summer of 2019. Stations will be located at convenient EV charging stops with access to retail, dining, parking and other facilities.

Electrify America LLC, which is headquartered in Reston, Virginia, will invest $2 billion over 10 years in Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) infrastructure, education and access. For more information, visit www.electrifyamerica.com.
